This year, most of us have felt cooped up for far too long already. And with piles of snow, it can be easy to feel like the cabin fever will never end!
Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be that way. You can take advantage of this winter season by enjoying a variety of fun outdoor activities right here in White Lake.
Here’s a look at some of our favorite cold weather things to do in the area.
#1 – Snowmobiling on the Hart-Montague Bike Trail.
At The Weathervane Inn, we’re lucky enough to be located just a few steps away from the trailhead of the Hart-Montague Bike Trail. This 22-mile trail is perfect for walking, jogging, and biking in the summer. But in the winter, it becomes the ideal path for snowmobile enthusiasts.
The trail takes you along smooth terrain that winds through the most beautiful countryside of West Michigan. Of course, there are several other snowmobile paths in the area that run parallel to and bypass the Hart-Montague trail. Check out this map to see the entire network of trails, and start planning your West Michigan snowmobile adventure today!
#2 – Snowshoeing at local state parks and nature preserves.
If snowmobiling’s not your thing, try your hand at snowshoeing. This activity offers excellent outdoor exercise and wonderful views of the untouched nature throughout the White Lake area. Several parks and nature preserves in the area are perfect for this unique type of winter hiking. Alternatively, head south to the nearby Muskegon Winter Sports Complex for some snowshoeing within Muskegon State Park.
#3 – Ice fishing at local lakes.
Whether you’re new to ice fishing or an avid angler, the numerous bodies of water throughout the White Lake area offer opportunities for great ice fishing. When conditions are safe, many fishermen can be found on White Lake in the early hours of the morning.
To find out more about ice fishing in Michigan, including safety information, where to fish, and necessary requirements and gear, check out The Michigan Department of Natural Resources page on ice fishing. Keep in mind that you will need an individual Michigan fishing license any time you fish in the state of Michigan.
Not interested in ice fishing yourself but have a partner who loves casting a line? No worries! While your significant other is out enjoying their time in their shanty, take the opportunity to rest up back at the hotel in your very own in-room hot tub! Add a cup of hot chocolate or glass of wine … perhaps a good book or your favorite movie? What could be better!
#4 – Exploring the frozen Lake Michigan shoreline.
While most people are accustomed to enjoying Lake Michigan in the summertime, winter is in fact a particularly magical time to enjoy the lake. Come at the right time, and you can see some pretty gnarly ice formations, like ice boulders, pancake ice, or other unique shapes and structures. Every day is different!
If you do plan on heading out for a walk along the beach in winter, just be sure to bring your cold weather gear, and don’t stay out too long. Walking on the Lake Michigan shore in winter is frigid cold — even on a nice day!
Beat the winter blues — Don’t stay cooped up at home this season!
Even if you don’t enjoy outdoor winter adventure, there’s still plenty of activities to do in the White Lake area. From shopping in downtown Montague or Whitehall, to grabbing takeout or dining in, White Lake offers activities to interest a wide variety of personalities. You might even consider your getaway as simply a change of scenery (which we probably all need more than ever right now).
