Complicated plane travel and big rowdy crowds in southern vacation destinations not your thing? Why not flip spring break on its head and book your own “Adult Spring Break” right here in The Mitten State!
Enjoy a “Spring Break for Adults” in the Gorgeous White Lake Area
Aside from college students, most people take spring breaks that are geared toward the kids. And while taking children along for a fun-filled, educational vacation can be great, we think the adults could use some relaxation of their own.
So, bring along your spouse or significant other (or make this trip a “gals retreat”!) and book an affordable, stress-free vacation that’s geared toward you.
The White Lake area is the perfect spot for your Adult Spring Break. There’s plenty to do for all types of vacationers — from foodies and those who love to shop, to art-lovers and adventurers. Plus, the beauty of White Lake and Lake Michigan is always on the horizon.

Explore Local Parks and Trails
As in most parts of Michigan, spring weather along the Lake Michigan shoreline can change overnight. Still, it’s generally by this time of year that we’ve said farewell to snow that sticks and “Hello!” to new blooms, green grass, and warmer temps.
Spring is the seasonal transition that most tourists miss when they visit our area, but it’s truly a site to be seen — when nature comes to life after the long sleep of winter. This also makes it the perfect time to get out and enjoy hikes, bike rides, and other open-air activities.
Here are a few of our favorite parks and trails in the area:
- Duck Lake State Park: 728-acre park with open brush land, sand dunes, mature hardwood forest, meadowland, and beach access at Lake Michigan.
- Clear Springs Nature Preserve: 100-acre nature preserve, great for hiking, dog walking, trail jogging, picnicking, and more. Small ponds can be used for canoeing as well.
- Hart-Montague Bike Trail State Park: 22-mile long, paved bike trail that winds through trees, meadowland, and gently rolling hills. Perfect for a day trip or a quick jaunt to get some exercise. Picnic tables and lookouts dot the trail — great for enjoying a rustic sack lunch with friends or a midafternoon break from riding.
Shop Our Charming Downtown Areas
The White Lake Area is unique in that we have two downtown areas right next to each other! The towns of Montague and Whitehall are separated only by a bridge over White River. You can easily walk from one town to the other in just 10-15 minutes. Still, they each have their own unique character.
For example, in Montague, you’ll find:
- The Book Nook & Java Shop
- Sweet Annie and Company
- Figgs Boutique
In Whitehall, there’s:
- Colby’s Hokey Pokey
- Bells of Whitehall
- Pitkin Drug and Gift Shoppe
Both downtown areas boast numerous other shops and stores to explore! Just keep in mind that while most shops are now open with regular hours, some shops may still be just opening up for the season and/or have reduced hours due to former COVID-19 restrictions. It’s always a good idea to call ahead if there’s a particular shop you want to try, or just ask at the front desk and we’d be glad to do some sleuthing for you.
Dine-In or Take-Out
Right now, restaurants and bars in Montague and Whitehall are open for indoor dining at 50% capacity. Keep in mind that this may change at any time, but in general, you can expect a seat if you’re interested in dining out!
On the other hand, we all know that enjoying take-out in your own comfortable hotel room can be just as delightful as going out. So, if you’re in the mood for some pizza, tacos, or other delectable to-go fare, we’ve got you covered there too. Stream a movie or just enjoy the view from your balcony while you dine.
